The island of Portland in Dorset is a top location for outdoor adventure on the South Coast, and has loads to offer anyone who loves a challenge – especially those carrying a few extra pounds. Whatever your passion and whatever your level, we’ve got something to help raise the pulse.

Running
Tuesdays, 6.30pm, Royal Manor of Portland Athletics Club

Cap that romantic weekend break or make marriage proposal truly memorable with a stunning coastal trail run. You can take in the famous scenery over three distances; full or half-marathon, or a 10k. Entry: http://www.bustinskin.com/events/portland-coastal-marathon/

28 Feb, Tuff-Enuff Portland Breakout
This hostile and shouty assault course is designed to push you to your limits. Opt for a 5k or a 12k option. The organisers describe the event as ‘…multiple obstacles fiendishly designed to push you to breaking point physically, mentally and psychologically and you’re in for an experience that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.’ Painkillers optional.

Triathlon
12 April, Osprey Sprint Triathlon

Walking
13 Feb, Portland Cliffs and Quarries
Led by the very knowledgeable and spry Bob Ford, this walk explores the geology, wildlife and history of Portland, while offering you some great views and a chance to stretch your legs over 90 minutes. For more details: http://www.dorsetwalks.com/

Tuesdays and Sundays: Group Cycle Rides

Workouts
If you prefer to take your dose of endorphins inside, the Osprey Centre and YMCA both offer traditional gym and fitness programmes.
